New here-3 pounds in 5 days?!?

Post by Mom In High Heels » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:15 am

Hello, I discovered no-s recently and started on Monday. It's both easier and harder than I thought, especially when faced with soft pretzels at every turn (I live in Germany courtesy of the US Army). As of this morning, I was down 3 pounds. Is that possible in just 5 days (really 4, I guess)? I HAVE ramped up my exercise because we're going on a Mediterranean cruise in 4 weeks and I want to tone up a bit more, so maybe that's part of it. I'm not much overweight (5'4, 163 lbs), but I've gained a lot over the past 2 years due to medication. Two years ago I weighed 130 lbs. The doctors have changed my medication about 3 months ago (at my demand) and that helped me drop about 8 pounds, but I'd like to get back to 130.
My biggest problem is that dh is a HUGE snacker. I do okay when he's gone (he's been gone this whole week), but when he comes home, argh! Ds is also a big snacker, but he's 7 and is 53" tall and weighs all of 63 lbs. He's also a really healthy snacker (makes a mom proud). He snacks on apples, clementines, dates (because Indiana Jones at them in Raiders of the Lost Ark and ds (Indy) plans to be IJ when he grows up), and Greek yogurt with honey or blueberries. Indy's snacking doesn't bother me because he's a growing boy and snacks healthy, but dh likes junk and as much as I don't want to eat it, I sometimes can't help myself.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and introduce myself.

Hello and welcome aboard!

Is it possible to have lost 3 pounds in 4 days? Yes. Is it probable? No. Weight can vary by 1-2 pounds daily for many reasons.

Welcome! Your initial weight loss is probably water, especially if you were doing a lot of snacking on salty or sugary foods before NoS.

As for the snacking--my husband's a snacker, too. Fortunately, it's mostly healthy stuff because I do the grocery shopping, and I simply refuse to buy packaged food. I know it can be tempting to join him when he's eating between meals, but unless he plans on giving up the habit, it'll just be something you have to get used to. Fortunately, the more frequently you say no to snacking, the more ingrained your habit will become. In the meantime, you can keep yourself occupied when he snacks by making a cup of tea or even having a glass of milk or juice.

I figured it might be water weight as I do snack on lots of salty snacks. Ritz crackers are my down fall, not to mention those yummy German pretzels. OMG, so good.
I too do the grocery shopping, and generally buy healthy stuff, but Mr. HH is not above bringing junk into the house. Very irritating. Thanks to the volcanic ash cloud floating over Europe, he's trapped in Poland (if you call having to stay at a swanky 4 star hotel paid for by the army trapped) for at least another 2 days so I may do no s this weekend while he's still gone and do my S days the first 2 he gets back. He'll be leaving again for another 3 weeks on Thurs, so I can no s it up with no temptations for a while. :)

I see how you're trying to set yourself up for success by taking the weekend as N-days and then having S-days when your husband comes home. However, I'd advise against making trades--especially when you're first starting out. You want to build a strong habit of N-days during the week and S-days on the weekend, that way, you'll have the structure in place to deal with any situation (your husband will, at some point, be home for longer than a few days I assume?). I say take your S-days this weekend, and if you want to celebrate when your husband is back, take a NWS day and do something special.

Welcome!

I second marygrace's note of caution about trading S-days...

Though it may be worth it in your case (just consider it carefully).

I miss those pretzels, too. And the wurst... It's possible to get decent beer here in Cambridge but I pine for a decent plate of Wurst and Kartoffelsalat.

Best of luck you and your husband navigating that volcanic cloud,

Reinhard
