Sugary Souther BBQ

I'm in my 2nd week of No S. Today I was running around for lunch and stopped at a Southern BBQ place. I had a plate with brisket, beans, fries, coleslaw and an unsweetened ice tea. However, there was LOADS of sugar in the coleslaw, BBQ sauce, beans... Sugar wise it might be like eating a dessert. Is this allowed?

Also, in the John Goodman article someone posted he said, "Sugar creates hunger and craving'". I try to avoid sugar food normally except on S Days.

Any advice?

Yes, sugar is allowed. It's not "no sugar", it's "no sweets." While that particular meal may have contained more than usual, it's not cause for concern in terms of whether or not the day was a success or failure. Chalk it up to experience.

While writing this, I did realize that most of the dishes that you were concerned about are things that only show up in my house on S days. But then I'm from the North!

I don't avoid sugar on N days, because it often balances the flavor of a savory dish.

It's not what you eat at one meal, though sweets are not allowed. If you ate a restaurant-sized meal of this all these foods every day, it's doubtful No S would help you. But you don't, right? This meal is technically allowed, and if you are just starting out, just eat! but as time goes on, you would just start to notice if you need the entire portion of all the foods they give you. I've learned from experience that the equivalent of about half a plate is all the dense food I need: the meat with sauce, the beans, and fries. I try to get some green salad (I don't like the dressing on cole slaw--mayonnaise, ugh!) for the other half of my plate and I prefer taking bites of meat with barbecue sauce mixed with bites of salad over salad dressing. I just feel better after the meal when I eat this way. You'll discover your best habits, too.
